FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS THE AGE LIMIT FOR SKYDIVING?
There is no age limit but we don’t encourage anyone under 10 years old. If you are under 18 years of age, you will need a parent or guardian to sign the consent form on your behalf. Young children are assessed on a case-by-case basis. It will depend on whether they can fit properly into the harness. You must be 17 years and above to do the 18,500ft jump.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear comfortable clothes that are suitable for the weather. The temperature in winter can be very cold so a few layers are a good idea. Closed toe, lace up shoes are recommended (trainers rather than hiking boots). We’ll give you a jumpsuit to go over your clothes, plus a hat, goggles and gloves during winter.
WHAT IF I WEAR CONTACT LENSES OR GLASSES?
No problem - Contact lenses can be worn under your goggles and we have slightly larger goggles that fit snuggly over the top of glasses.
CAN I BRING SPECTATORS?
Absolutely. The beauty about our dropzone is that it all happens at the same place and so your friends and family will be able to see you board the aircraft and will then be able to watch you land. If you’re using one of our free pick up options, we will try our best to fit your spectators in. However, spaces are limited so we can’t guarantee them a lift.
IS THERE A WEIGHT LIMIT?
Yes, for safety reasons we are unable to take anyone over 100kg. There is a weight limit of 90kg for the 18,500 jump. If you are unsure of your weight then feel free to come to the dropzone and weigh yourself on our scales.
WHAT ARE YOUR OPENING HOURS?
WHAT WEATHER CONDITIONS PREVENT ME FROM SKYDIVING?
For safety reasons, we are unable to jump in complete cloud cover, rain or high winds. Taupo has its own microclimate and it can change very quickly. Your safety is very important to us so we will make sure the conditions are ideal before you jump.
WHAT IF THE WEATHER IS BAD?
If the weather is bad when you phone to confirm your jump we will re-schedule you for another time later that day or the next day depending on your schedule. We will give you a choice of times that we have available and you can let us know which one suits you.
WHAT TYPE OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
The easiest way to pay is while making your booking online. We accept all credit and debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex), and also Alipay, WeChat Pay, JD Pay (Chinese Yuan). If you book over the phone, or just walk in, you can pay on site in cash (NZD), Visa, MasterCard, and NZ Eftpos. (Please note a 1.5% surcharge is applicable when paying by credit card).
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
We are located at Taupo Airport, 7 minutes south of Taupo township. Once you’re on the main airport road, take the first right turn and you will see our hangar, it’s black with a pink sculpture of our plane on the front.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
You need to allow 2 ½ to 3 hours from the time you arrive at the dropzone to complete your skydive. The time we give you is your booking time and not the time you will be boarding the plane. We always aim to have customers on the plane as soon as possible, however sometimes we are delayed by factors out of control such as weather changes, restrictions with other aircraft in the area etc.
HOW LONG ARE WE IN THE PLANE FOR?
The flight takes about 20 minutes.
HOW LONG IS THE FREEFALL?
HOW LONG IS THE RIDE WITH THE PARACHUTE OPEN?
After the parachute opens you’ll have about 5 minutes before safe-landing.
DO YOU HAVE A PICK UP SERVICE?
Yes, we have a free limo pick up and drop off service in Taupo and a free return shuttle to and from Rotorua. If you would like to bring spectators with you, we will try to fit them in. However, spaces are limited so we can’t guarantee them a lift.
WHAT TIME DO WE HAVE NEED TO ARRIVE FOR OUR JUMP?
Please call us 30 minutes before your booking time to confirm your jump. Once confirmed, please arrive at your booking time and allow 2 ½ to 3 hours to complete your whole skydive experience.
I'M NOT SURE WHAT HEIGHT I WANT TO JUMP FROM?
Don’t worry, we go through all options with you when you arrive at the dropzone. We will explain the differences in the heights and will also explain all our video and photo options. After you have had all the information you can decide which options you would like to take.
CAN I TAKE MY CAMERA IN THE PLANE WITH ME?
For reasons of safety we don’t allow our passengers to bring any personal belongings in the plane (medical items such as inhalers can be carried by your Instructor). Small items can get easily lost and bigger items can come out during freefall, potentially causing damage to anything that they happen to land on.
CAN I GO IN THE PLANE IF I’M NOT JUMPING?
Unfortunately, due to safety regulations, we can’t allow spectators in the plane. Everyone in the plane must have a parachute – and that includes the pilot. We have a spectator area on the ground where you can see all the action.
WHAT SHOULD I EAT BEFORE I JUMP?
Just eat normally – you shouldn’t feel sick.
CAN I JUMP WITH MY FRIENDS?
HOW MUCH CAN I SEE?
Lots – especially if you jump from 18,500ft. On a clear day, you may even be able to see both coasts of the North Island, Mount Taranaki to the southwest, Napier to the east and the Rotorua Lakes to the north. Even from 12,000 feet the views are spectacular, with breathtaking views of the Tongariro National Park (including Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings) and Great Lake Taupo.
IS IT COLD?

WHAT ABOUT THE LANDING? WILL IT HURT?
Your landing will be slow, gentle and won’t hurt at all. Our parachutes are designed for tandems and so are very easy to steer and slow down ready for landing. Depending on the conditions you may slide into land on your bottom or you may land standing up. If you have knee or leg injuries, make sure you tell your instructor and they can adjust your landing accordingly.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DECIDE NOT TO JUMP?
It is very rare that people decide not to jump. However if you decide not to jump before you board the plane, you won’t get charged for a jump.
CAN MY FRIEND AND ME BE FILMED AT THE SAME TIME?
Unfortunately, it’s not easy for our cameramen to film more than one person at a time. You will be leaving the plane in roughly 10-second intervals, falling at 200km/h! We can do our best to film you and your friends during the flight and on the ground before and after your jump.
WILL I BE SAFE?
Skydive Taupo has an excellent safety record and we follow very strict safety standards. We have an experienced team whose mission is to make your experience with us as safe and memorable as possible. We are members of the New Zealand Parachute Industry Association (NZPIA) regulatory body and our operation is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
